The jiesheng is a good luck charm that signifies one’s joyous fortune ahead. The term literally means “knotted rope” and in Chinese appears as 結繩 (jié shéng). Its association with good luck comes from the first character’s resemblance to the character for lucky: 吉 (jí). Also, the term’s second character has a sound similar to the Chinese word for divine: 神 (shén).
